Spotlight on a Book: The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson details an often untold American epic. The Great Migration was the movement of nearly 6 million black citizens as they fled the South in the 1900s for northern and western cities in search of a better life.
Wilkerson interviewed thousands of individuals to write this history that interweaves the lives of 3 main firsthand accounts with other stories and historical research from newspapers, census data, and official records of the time. The author even attempted (unsuccessfully) one of the exhausting cross-county trips from the South to California, only stopping at the hotels and gas stations deemed safe for black travelers to use during the 1960s. This book is a recommended for anyone interested in American history.
